What is the PADI Open Water Diver certification?

The PADI Open Water Diver course is the most popular beginner scuba diving certification in the world. The certification is valid for life, accepted worldwide, and allows you to dive (with a buddy) independently of a dive professional. This is the basic course that most divers take as their first certification.

Why take the Open Water course with Salty Boogers?

We are serious educators and are flexible to operate on your schedule. We offer private courses that are tailored to each individual or small group and we strive to make you as comfortable as possible. Offering fully private courses allow us to accommodate last minute changes or individual challenges. We also provide mixed level training for groups with divers of different experience levels, perfect for families and friends.

How much does it cost?

$500 USD including the E-Learning ($230 alone), equipment rental, and certification fees. We accept payments in Dollars, Lempiras, Venmo, Paypal, and major cryptocurrencies. This also includes one free fun dive in addition to your course which no other dive shop on Roatan will offer you!

What will we do in the course?

The PADI Open Water course consists of three main phases:

Knowledge development: You'll learn about the theory of scuba diving, including equipment, dive planning, and safety precautions. Most of this can be done in advance through E-Learning, or it can be completed in more traditional classroom sessions with your instructor.

Confined water: You'll learn essential skills in a controlled environment like a swimming pool or shallow bay. You'll practice essential diving skills to prepare for your open water dives, and hopefully see some interesting sea creatures along the way!

Open water: You'll complete four dives on Roatan's beautiful coral reef. On these dives, you will demonstrate your skills and experience diving with the marine life on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. After successfully completing these phases and demonstrating competency, you will receive your PADI Open Water Diver certification.

The course typically takes 2.5 to 3 days to complete and includes all necessary equipment, training materials, and certification fees. Come and explore the underwater world with us!

Who will be my instructor?

At Salty Boogers, you will have the same instructor for every day in your course. Your instructor knows about you, any challenges you might experience, and what you have already learned. Our experienced instructors are training students everyday and strive to make this a fun, safe, and informative experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Im feeling pretty nervous, what should I do?

Let's take it slow! We can start nice and easy with a Discover Scuba Diving experience. When everything goes well, we can credit the DSD experience as the first day of your certification course at no extra cost. Consider the PADI Scuba Diver Course as well as an easier alternative to the full Open Water Diver Course.

Can I use my own gear?

Of course! Rental gear is included in the course, but using your own gear is the best way to dive. We highly recommend that every diver owns their own scuba mask and dive computer at a minimum, but this is not required for the course. Please ask for our recommendations before making any purchases.

What is the main difference between the Scuba Diver certification and the Open Water Diver certification?

The Scuba Diver course is essentially half of the Open Water Diver course. Most people take the full OW course to start, but the SD course is an excellent option for most new divers.

The PADI OW course is designed to prepare you to dive without the supervision of a dive pro. The course typically takes 3 days and requires 4-6 hours of independent study. Maximum depth is 60 feet (18 meters).

The PADI SD course is designed to prepare you to dive under the direct supervision of a dive pro. The course typically takes 1.5 days and requires 2-3 hours of independent study. Maximum depth is 40 feet (12 meters).

How deep will we go?

The maximum depth for confined water training is 10-20 ft.
The maximum depth for open water dives 1 and 2 is 40 feet.
The maximum depth for open water dives 3 and 4 is 60 feet.

Whats should I bring?

Just bring a good attitude and the willingness to learn! We recommend wearing your bathing suit under a t-shirt in the morning and bringing a rash guard or quick-dry shirt to wear into the water. Consider bringing a water bottle, towel, change of clothes, and a little cash for the local shops.

Where will we do the course?

The 4 open water dives will be conducted on Roatan's barrier reef. The confined water training is typically conducted in Half Moon Bay in West End. Any classroom sessions can be done at the dive shop or in a variety of locations including your hotel. We often meet in the morning at Bean Crazy for a comfortable place to talk and do paperwork. This coffee shop is located right in front of the swim zone in Half Moon Bay.
